A Luminous Republic

(Město světla)
by Andrés Barba

„… the children… came to visit, but they became parasites; they appeared weak, yet they were capable of destroying the patient work of many centuries.“

The town of San Cristóbal experiences economic prosperity in the early 1990s. A new waterfront promenade, solid houses, and sports cars. Yet a group of children decides to create a completely different „city of light“ on the edge of the jungle—without hierarchy, with their own language and values. Their very existence undermines the established order.

A play inspired by the acclaimed novel by Spanish-Argentinian author Andrés Barba portrays the nature of conflicts between majority and minority, order and anarchy, adults and children. How can we deal with a different understanding of the world without becoming its staunch enemies? And haven’t we already been on a completely wrong path for generations?
